Healthcare and Insurance
If you are a foreigner and are sptaying in the Czech Republic for more than 90 days, you must have comprehensive health insurance with the PVZP insurance company, which is the state insurance company.
You can choose from several types of insurance. Before you choose, we recommend that you consider whether you are receiving long-term treatment for any illness (including mental illness) and whether you need to be prescribed medication regularly by a doctor in the Czech Republic.
- Basic Foreigners‘ Medical Insurance – coverage of the costs of necessary and urgent treatment and hospitalisation at all healthcare facilities in the Czech Republic to the extent necessary. This type of insurance excludes for example psychiatrist treatment.
- Foreigners‘ Comprehensive Medical Insurance PLUS – the scope corresponds public medical insurance, but is not identical. For this type of insurance students between 15 and 30 years of age (with proof of education) can apply for a discount.
- Foreigners‘ Comprehensive Medical Insurance EXCLUSIVE – the scope is identical to that provided under public medical insurance in the Czech Republic, there are no exclusions.
If you need to visit a doctor, contact the insurance company. You will be told which doctors work with the specific insurance company and you will get recommendations on who specifically to turn to.You will be told which doctors work with the specific insurance company and you will get recommendations on who specifically to turn to.
If you need to see a doctor urgently or there is no room to contact the insurance company, pay the amount for the treatment or for the prescribed medication. The retained receipts will then be reimbursed by the insurance company according to your type of insurance.
In state hospitals, doctors and nursing staff usually speak only Czech. You can look for a private clinic where they guarantee communication in English and other languages. For example, we recommend Health Centre Prague.
For Erasmus students
For students from the EU it is necessary to have a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) with confirmation from PVZP. EHIC card is for students from the EU, Norway, Switzerland, Liechtenstein and Iceland.
You must show your EHIC card and a special confirmation from the PVZP whenever you visit a doctor or medical institution.
